Title: Red Shirt
July 5, 2008
Mood: Spazzzzzzzzzzzzz. Content. Fulfilled. And hints of fangirling.
Listening to: Audios (and videos) from the 1000th Episode of Pops in Seoul
Did you look for me there? I saw tons of people. I even saw you. They asked me where I was seated. I couldn’t answer them. I was, after all, all over the place. I couldn’t stay at one place, I couldn’t get my butt stuck at one seat (or step –even a space on the floor) nor could I stay put just like what the usherettes were shouting about. No. I was fangirling. No one can stop me while I fangirl!
So. What exactly am I talking about? You read what I was listening to? Yeah. I went there. In the flesh with my cousins. We arrived at the Manila film Center at about 2:30 in the afternoon. There were already a lot of people crowding outside, waiting to be let in. And so we waited. Like everybody else. (By the way, when we were in the shuttle that’d take us there, we met other fangirls. No we didn’t make friends with them, we just like, yeah, met them.)
Back to the story. We were in red. just because we love the color, and because Cassiopeia Philippines required all people listed under them wear red. We didn’t mind. We were actually excited, and because of that, I kind of decided on one big thing. We’ll get to that later.
Getting inside, some of the usherettes were handing blue stickers, (but like, we were wearing red, and you’re giving us blue stickers. Are you kidding us??? *No offense*) telling us to vote for our favorite artist. We kind of didn’t understand her at first, but when we saw the board, we kind of got the hint. We ran to the nearest unnie there, and asked for stickers. We didn’t think twice. We stuck them at the group whose faces were no longer visible. We were, after all, wearing RED. Two votes among the hundreds for Dong Bang Shin Gi.
So, when the event started, I was shouting at Apple telling her that no matter what, I’d go down there (we were originally seated at the very top) and take pictures and videos. I’d like to take as many as I can. For myself, for my cousins, and for my lovely sister who’s in Batangas.
Isak sang I Turn To You, originally by Christina Aguilera. She wasn’t able to hit all the high notes perfectly, but hell, she’s a joy to listen to. Even if the humongous speaker was blaring behind me, it didn’t hurt my ear at all.
Up next was Evan, who sang a song I don’t know. (was that his song? I only know It’s Okay to Cry) anyhow. I love him because he kept on going to OUR side of the stage, which was at the left. (Here, I’ve already gone up to fetch Apple and back again to settle at that part of the hall.) so yeah. He was like THIS close. You can just imagine with the quality of video I got (which is not very good, but I’ll blame it on the lights. T_T) at first, the unnies there won’t let us get close, but eventually they did. So I got closer views of Evan. Side stories, two fangirls were in front of me. They were giggling and all. When Evan raised his arms, (you know what happens when someone does this) yeah, his boxers showed. So, back to those two unnies. They looked at each other, then shrieked. Hahaha. Of course I saw that too. (pervie me~) I took a picture!!! ROFL.
Yada. Evan sang three songs, the first one that I don’t know, and then This Love, and lastly, kyah` another one I have no idea about. (I need to research more on Evan. I feel guilty +_+) so that ended his performance. He was a special guest, by the way.
Oh. I met a long lost online and offline friend. Edline was there, with us at the front.
Then, Isak danced. I wasn’t able to get a good video of that dance (well, if you think my video was good enough. Haha) but it was VERY sexy and seductive… errr. “F” hahahaha. I SO LOVE HER!!! After her dance, the Emcee asked for participants from the audience to dance with Isak onstage. Edline wanted to, but she wasn’t near enough the stage to get picked. I think. After Isak’s dance, though, the unnie there was shouting at us, asking us to go back to our seats. “If you don’t vacate this area, it’ll sink! Lahat tayo maiipit sa ilalim! Please lang! go back to your seats! We don’t want to die here!” said the unnie. Haha. Apple and I left that area asap. We don’t wanna die there. LMAO.
We retreated to our seat at the very back area. Yeah. We’re that good. +_+ there were fan performances, and games. One, Michelle is her name, I think, won the quiz. And she took home like 3 posters, two or three CD’s and kyah~ lucky girl!
“Pare, nag shopping ba siya sa YES! Asia! Andami niyang iuuwi ahh!”
They had a bit of question and answer. Before the event, there was this board outside where you can post questions for Isak and Evan. I had my share there, but I’m not telling what! Haha. So. Most of the questions were about the current status of the two, if they were dating or if they were single. Haha. Then one asked for Evan’s age. And Evan was, “Nineteen~” and everybody screamed their heads off! I was one of them!!! Kekeke.. which I regret, because we didn’t hear what he said next. Anybody correct me, was it, 1988???
And there. Before the ending of the event, Isak sang one more song, Umbrella. she dedicated it to the Filipino fans, and she kept on saying, “I love you, Philippines!”
Sadly, Div wasn’t able to reach MFC on time. but no worries, we had a lot more after the fan meeting!
Right when we were about to leave, actually, we missed two taxis already. Because the drivers kept on picking up other passengers even though we stopped them first. But you know what? We’re kind of thankful for that.
We originally wanted to go home immediately after. But then MOA sounded a lot better. So we sat there. At the bottom of MFC.
WHEN THIS PURPLE BUS ALMOST SQUISHED US!
It stopped at the center of MFC, inching itself closer to the grand staircase. We were just looking at it, from our spot, when suddenly people screamed, and started running up the staircase.
ISAK AND EVAN WERE DESCENDING THE STAIRS!
Time check: 5 PM
Yada. No second thoughts, I ran closer. Inching myself in between the purple bus and a van. I was kind of lucky, you know. There’s almost no soul there. AND LIKE THE DOOR OF THE BUS WAS LESS THAN A METER AWAY FROM ME. I saw Evan, waved at him, jumped up and down, before he finally entered the bus. I lokked behind me to check if Div and Apple were still standing beside me. But they’re kind of far. Then Div pointed behind me, “SI ISAK OH!” and yeah, as they say, the rest was history. I waived at her, when she entered the bus, she sat at our side of the bus (Evan was sitting behind her). Still waving to the people there, giving this heart shped out of her hands. AND WE’RE NOT TAKING PICTURES! Apple had her cell focused to take pictures, but she’s too star-strucked to take one! So Div shrieked, “PICTURE-an MO KAYA!” well, Apple did. With just one, though.
SO ANYBODY WHO HAS A PICTURE OF ISAK ON THAT BUS WITH REFLECTIONS OF THE PEOPLE THERE, PLEASE OH PLEASE SEND THEM TO ME! I’LL LOVE YOU FOR THAT!
And we were too hyper to care if people were staring at us for fangirling too much. I even missed that girl who was wearing the TOHOSHINKI shirt I love so much (the black one, with purple cross??? Any kind soul who’d want to give me something like that??? +_+ ).
And we were finally able to grab a cab. Reaching MOA, we decided to go to StarBucks, to just, you know, celebrate our fangirling moments! We entered that door, not the mall entrance, just the entrance for SB. But once inside, we can’t find seats. Div even said to just buy there, and look around the mall. But I complained saying that I’m too tired. And this guard inside said, “Pagkaalis nila, kuhanin mo yung table. Bawal kasi yan sa labas.”
So we kind of just went outside to look for seats (those outside SB, but still inside the mall). And yeah. We were standing there. Looking at other girls we assumed as fans, too.
Then Div said, “OH MY GOD ANDITO SILA!”
Time check: 5: 25 PM
I actually thought OTHERS! You know, others. Hahaha. That was funny.
Anyway, when it finally dawned to me that Div was referring to ISAK and EVAN! I can’t see them at first. Actually, I was looking at a different direction! But then Div twisted me here and there until I saw them, less than 5 meters, STRAIGHT AHEAD. I spotted Isak first, because SHE WAS LOOKING AT US AND SHE WAS SMILING!!! I seriously made a 360. And I kinda think Isak thought of me as someone amusing enough to be retarded. O_O omg. So yeah.
Div wanted me to go there and asked for autograph, but like, nobody was bothering them. THEN. Because, when a girl in red approached us, she asked us if we’ve taken pictures and we said no. we even asked her if we can and she said yes. I asked her if she has taken a picture and she said yes. So we immediately went to their table.
Of course I wanted to ask for an autograph, and a picture with her too! But there were already a group of ghirls there with us. And Isak’s assistant (I think) was waving no more pictures. I then decided that maybe I should ask Evan instead. But then again, a group of girls were already asking for his autograph. I turned to Div and saw that she was pleading one last picture of Isak. (she got it, by the way.) and after that, isak stood up. I knew immediately that I shouls aske for her autograph.
Don’t get mad at me *fangirl soul attacks*, but I kind of cornered her for a signature. When she was standing in front of me, NO HUMAN APART, a Korean guy, probably one of them, was shaking his head at me. But I kind of did something like this.
“ISAK, JUST ONE PLEASE! JUST ONE!”
She took the picture and pen from me, and signed.
Repeat.
SHE TOOK THE PICTURE AND PEN FROM ME AND SIGNED.
I turned to my cousins (who were behind me) to take a picture, but I guess they were too star strucked to do that, and I kind of thought that it’d be too rude of me.
And then, she returned it, and I thanked her oh so very much.
Yeah. Never in my life did I thought of ever approaching a GASOO and ask for an autograph like a crazy fangirl!!!
Things change, I guess. But yeah. Too much excitement in a span of less than 30 minutes.
We spazzed for like a few more minutes. Oh yeah, they left SB after that. So we grabbed their table for ourselves.
One word: obsessed.
Anyhow, I kind of felt guilty that we were partly the reason why they left. We kind of disturbed their peaceful break and relaxation. I have to apologize to Isak and Evan for my rude behavior.
ANYONE TELL ME A WAY!!!
So yeah. I used to think before that stalking fangirls are really very rude. I mean, it isn’t really very nice of them to do that, disturbing other people’s privacy. But you know what?
When you see your idol, someone THAT pretty, it’s kind of hard to think straight.
It’s hard to think before you act.
And as Div said, it’s hard to THINK. Period.
We went to the Manila Film Center. We watched the Fan Meeting. We enjoyed ourselves. We were able to get pictures and videos. I was able to ask for an autograph! I’m happy.
Then yeah. I forgot to say that every girl who approached us, asked, “Cass?”

On Being a Fangirl
People say fangirling is just a waste of time and money. They say that fangirls should be avoided at any cost. But have they given you any reason why? People judge fangirls this way because they see their outrageous behaviours only when they’re near their idols. But have they seen these girls beyond that point? You see, fangirling is not just about obsessions, it is also about enjoying life, enriching works of art, and making new friends.
Fangirling is a way of enjoying life. Going over the internet for a further meaning of the word, however, I doubt anyone in their right mind would say that. “Fangirling is the reaction a fangirl has to any mention or sighting of the object of her affection” (www.urbandictionary.com). The problem in this online definition lies in the way these fangirls show their love and excitement, and this questions the right way to enjoy life. June last year, according to www.popsoeul.com, marked a death of a fan because of the supposedly official fangirls of one boyband in Korea. They mentally tortured the poor girl who in the end decided to commit suicide. Another case of morbid fangirling, again in Korea, consists of threats aimed at a rising star, Jang Yoo-Joon, who they (the fans) thought is trying to copy the person of their obsession. In the end, Jang was scared to even step out of his own house, and for that matter is always accompanied by his manager. He was even afraid to turn on his computer because anti-fans kept on bashing him on the internet. On the other hand, fangirling comes in a better light when fangirls support their idols in whatever they do. Fans’ club like Cassiopeia go to every Dong Bang Shin Gi (TVXQ, a Korean boyband) concert to show their support. They watched TVXQ’s movie, Vacation, to prove to people that they truly love their idols. Another Korean fans’ club, the ELF, voted from all over the world for Super Junior’s (another Korean boyband) member, Hankyung, in a poll that would give him the chance to run for the Olympic Torch in the Beijing Olympics in August. These latter examples are more commonly known as fangirling. It’s a way of having fun, but at the same time getting criticisms for your actions.
Fangirling is also enriching works of art. The first evidence is cosplaying that came into life as a product of fangirling. De La Salle University Manila has given us a wonderful example of a cosplay when the College of Computer Studies hosted one last year. The theme of the said event was to dress up like your favourite anime character. Last December, Cassiopeia Philippines also hosted cosplays for “4G (Fourth Gathering)”. Colorful costumes, adorned with creative hairstyles, mark the night –or morning –of the cosplayers’ gatherings. Loud music and the delicious smell of food also linger every time they gather. It’s not just about the contest, but also showing to people how creative one can get because of their admiration. The next examples are popular fan fictions and reads with imaginations run wild as basis of their prevalence. Famous fan fictions would range from the basic sweet happy endings to disturbing vampire stories filled with angst. Most of these fan fictions are made by fangirls, dedicating them to their idols. Then comes the wonderful world of fan arts and graphics. The complicated environment of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Image Ready, ULead Video Studio and many more would be not much of a problem even if you’re a beginner at fan arts. These masterpieces range from dark manipulated photographs of their idols to brightly colored and texturized stock pictures. Browsing them on the internet is like passing by a virtual museum because of the creators’ different taste in art. Because of this, we can conclude that fanfictions, fan arts and graphics, and cosplays are still alive today partly because of fangirling. They are created basically to show off, but at the same time share these talents to anyone who’d care.
Fangirling is also a way of meeting and making new friends. I go over the internet frequently to get updated on the juicy news of my idols. Doing this for over two years, I’ve gained a lot of new online and offline friends. Some of them are from Davao, Cebu and even here in Manila. I’ve even met some of them! My cousin, Gerty, gained a new friend from New York because they have the same favourite singer. Another cousin of mine, Dan, met another fangirl from Brunei and they’re currently having a ‘graphic battle’ posted on the internet. Some of my online friends have joined fanlistings and fans’ clubs (Cassiopeia, Everlasting Friends (ELF), VIPs) which hold annual meeting and celebrations. During LEAP day this year, I got the chance to share my insights to another fangirl I met then and there. A few weeks ago, I also got to talk freely to one of my classmates in PERSEF1 because we’re both fangirls, at least she used to be one. But of course, these experiences don’t only stop at ‘fangirling’. Gerty’s friend from New York now treats her as a best friend because my cousin is the one she thinks best understands her. An online friend of mine from Pampanga now has more desire to pursue her dream because of my few advises. Another online friend of mine from Davao helped me finish a project on time just last term. As is, fangirling doesn’t stop at just “worshipping” their idols, some, like me and my cousins, form a friendship deeper than that.
